It’s almost 2018 and you know what that means…New Years Resolutions! And what New Year’s resolution tops the list more often than not? To lose weight.
This year, with the birth of my 3rd, I came face to face with the challenge of losing weight yet again. However, this time I had a few resources in my back pocket that made it so much easier than before.
In the past I have not been able to lose weight until my babies began to wean. This fall, however, I lost 20 pounds in 2 months, returning to my pre-baby weight BEFORE my little bundle had turned 5 months old. How did I do it? With a little help from these 5 items.

Fitbit
My Fitbit has motivated me to get off the couch and get walking every day. Prior to the use of my Fitbit I probably averaged around 4,000 steps a day. Now I make it my goal to get in 10,000 steps.
Yoga Mat
For body-weight exercises, having a yoga mat is a definite plus. It helps to avoid those rug burns when completing mountain climbers or knee push-ups. There is also something to be said for having a designated area for exercise.
Exercise Ball
This has been the only fitness equipment I have used during the past two months besides a yoga mat. Between walking and body-weight exercises, it’s been all I’ve needed to get the job done. Exercise ball leg raises get me every time!
The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook
I recently learned that I have an autoimmune disease. This handbook became a lifeline for me after Kiwi’s birth as autoimmune disease symptoms often escalate in the weeks and months following pregnancy. This book has not only helped me understand inflammation in the body, but shown me how to eat to minimize symptoms long-term. My greatest discovery was finding out that inflammation was most likely the cause for my weight retention after previous births. By eating according to this book (without calorie restrictions), I have consistently lost weight each week.
Friends
You know the phrase “there is strength in numbers?” This fall I definitely found that to be true with the help of multiple walking buddies. I found that by having a different walking buddy for each day of the week (and a few extra willing to serve as substitutes), I was able to be more consistent in my walking routine. And you know what? These are now some of my favorite times of the week because I am not only motivated to take my walking to the next level, I also get to chat with friends in the process!
