As I mentioned earlier, this month is all about creating a memorable marriage and that starts with the big “C” word–COMMUNICATION. I don’t know about you but this is one area my hubby and I are always working at improving. As such, here are 5 questions to help you get started in right direction today.
5 Questions You Should Ask Your Husband Today!
1. What can I do for you today?
I never will forget the first time a wise mentor shared this question with me. She told me, “Kathy, above all else, ask this one question every day. Your husband will appreciate you just for asking it, knowing that you are willing to serve him even if he has nothing for you to do in response.” Since receiving this wise bit of advice I have tried most days to do just that–ask my dear husband what I can do for him. It tells him that above all else I am here to serve him…above the housework…above the children… above my to-do lists…above all else, God has placed me in my husband’s arms to serve him.
2. How can I pray for you today?
Want to take it to an even deeper level? Ask your husband this question. It may be just the thing that causes him to open up about some turmoil at work or a challenging situation he is having with a friend. Whatever the answer, don’t forget to pray for your husband or with your husband because when your husband shares an answer to this question, it’s when your husband needs your prayers the most.
3. How was your day?
This another one of those questions I try to ask of my hubby nearly every day. In fact, it is so common around our house as we sit down at the dinner table that sometimes my children now beat me to it. “How was your day daddy,” they will ask. And then Goose has the opportunity to share what has been going on during the day and decompress from work so he can have a joyful and hopefully less-stressful evening. It also shows him that we as his family take an interest in what he is doing and appreciate him serving us by going to work each day.
4. What did God teach you today?
I confess, this is not a question I ask every day of my husband but try to at least ask it a couple times a week because it opens the door for more heartfelt and meaningful conversations. Some days it may be “What did you gather from the sermon today?” or “What did you glean most from today’s group Bible Study?” Other days it may be “What are you reading today?” or “What stuck out to you today as you read today’s Bible passage?” Whatever the question, the focus is always the same–“What did God teach you today?” In this way we are able to encourage each other spiritually and grow closer to both God and each other.
5. What have you heard or seen lately that was so funny it made you laugh?
This question is just plain fun because there is no better medicine to draw two people closer than laughter. When was the last time you laughed with your husband? My guess for many of us is that it has been way too long. Start with this question tonight and you may be surprised where it leads. I know I have been on a few occasions and what fun it was too!
