Over the last two years my daughter has repeatedly asked me if she could start a business. I have to admit I have been rather reluctant to jump off that bridge until now because my daughter is only 9. Yet, she has a heart to serve, a desire to work, and an ambition for the future that is hard to ignore. That is why I was very excited to learn about The Kingdom Code, an amazing entrepreneurial curriculum for kids.
I wanted something that I could use to help teach my daughter the entrepreneurial skills needed to run her own business in a systematic way, and the Kingdom Code has more than met my expectations. While we have only used the curriculum for a few weeks, my daughter is eagerly excited about continuing this curriculum this fall. Honestly, this the one of the first curriculum’s I’ve ever seen her so excited about. In fact, you can see both my girls’ initial responses here.
The excitement initially started when I first met Jimmie back in May at our Oklahoma Homeschool Convention. When we met, my girls and I quickly grew quite fond of “Aunt Jimmie” as she is called in the curriculum. Now that we’ve begun the curriculum, our excitement for The Kingdom Code continues to grow.
What I Love About the Kingdom Code
As a Christian homeschool mom, here are just a few of the reasons I am glad we found this curriculum:
- It’s Christ-centered. From lesson one, it all starts with Christ. Jimmie explains up-front to students that if they are not a Christian, they will never truly be a “Kingdom Code Kid” who makes, saves, and spends money God’s way.
- It’s hands-on. While there are worksheets to complete, there are also fun reinforcement activities to do. For example, in lesson one the girls were to use clay to make a person who has on the Armor of God. On another day they got to play charades. There was even a day where they could have created a city using MindCraft.
- It’s thorough. It not only teaches entrepreneurial skills but also teaches money management skills, and life skills that will help them be successful beyond the initial creation of a business. In The Kingdom Code, Jimmie covers how to relate to customers, how to save, tithe, and share, how to promote your business, and even basic business ethics.
- It’s takes little prep work. After the initial set-up of the student notebooks, it takes very little time to get ready for the next lesson. The lesson plans are very clearly laid out in the teacher’s guide and after a couple of lessons the student can easily follow the pattern of a typical lesson to know what is coming next.
An Overview of The Kingdom Code
- It’s written specifically for ages 8-14.
- There are 34 lessons.
- Each lesson takes 2-15 to 45 minute sessions depending on the activities included.
- Each lesson includes reading from the textbook, written work, reinforcement activities, and vocabulary to review.
- Many items that a child needs to get started in a business are also included–business forms, a receipt book, and even stickers to be placed on their money pouches for easy financial organization.
Why The Kingdom Code Might NOT Be for You
While I think The Kingdom Code is a fabulous curriculum, The Kingdom Code might not be a good fit for you, your family, or your school if…
- You are not a faith-based family or school. As I mentioned earlier, this curriculum is very Christ-centered so to teach it without the key ingredient would just not be possible.
- Your child is not interested in being an entrepreneur. While The Kingdom Code also teaches money management and life skills, the primary focus is to help your child become an entrepreneur.
- If your child is younger than 8. While there may be a few kids out there ready to pursue a business at a young age, this curriculum is really geared towards 4th grade and up. That said, if you do have a child under the age of 8 who wants to participate alongside an older sibling, I recommend The Kingdom Code Coloring Book. Teacup has been excited that she gets to do something with the Kingdom Code alongside her sister while she’s learning.
