Lent has started. Spring is in the air. Yes, Easter will be here before we know it. And around here, we love Easter, especially since Peanut was born on a Good Friday. However, when it comes to talking about Easter and sharing the meaning of Easter will a toddler and a preschooler, finding resources that view Easter as something more than a candy and Easter bunny holiday can sometimes be a bit challenging. That is one reason I really like Lisa Tawn Bergren’s new book, God Gave Us Easter.
I first learned about Lisa Tawn Bergren’s books when I read God Gave Us Love and immediately fell in love with her cute bear illustrations and deep Biblical depth presented in such a way that even little ones can understand the Gospel message. This book, God Gave Us Easter, is no different.
The book begins…
“I love Easter,” Little Cub said.
“Me too,” Papa Bear said. “It’s even better than Christmas.”
“Better than Christmas? Why?”
“Because on Christmas, we celebrate Jesus’ birthday. But on Easter, we remember we get to be with him forever.”
From there the bears talk about candy, the Easter bunny, eggs, Spring, and how they all point us back to the true meaning of Easter–Jesus and the gift of rebirth in Christ. I also love the part where Lisa has the bears talk about what is involved in prayer–it includes both talking AND listening with your heart.
If you are looking for a book to read to your children and/or grandchildren in preparation for Easter, I highly recommend God Gave Us Easter. And who knows…you just may learn something about God and His love for you in the process too. Happy Easter!
