Recently my family has been going to the family doctor…a lot. Between ear infections, sore throats, annual check-ups, and asthma, we have definitely seen our share of a doctor’s office for the year. That said, during my daughter’s annual check-up, the doctor encouraged us to keep track of our fruit and veggie intake. Could we consistently eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day? We decided to take the challenge with a healthy eating checklist.
Did you know that only about 1 in 10 Americans eat enough fruits and vegetables in their diet? And eating your fruits and veggies are important because they help lower a person’s risk of chronic illnesses such as obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and more…not to mention the overall health of an individual.
We decided not to be part of that 1 in 10 statistic anymore so we have made up a game to keep us motivated to eat better.
Let’s Get Healthy
The point of the game is to mark off 3 vegetables, 2 fruits and 6-8 glasses of water a day (depending on the age of the individual) as well as take our vitamins every day. While we have just used the cards for bragging rights so far, if you feel inclined you could present an award to whoever fills their card first, or whoever fills their card for a week, or whatever motivates your family to be more healthy too.
The cards are available both in bright and traditional colors. Just write in your names at the top, laminate and go! We have our checklists on our refrigerator and use a dry erase marker to mark off our food and water intake every day allowing us to use the same sheet over and over. If you want to use these checklists as bookmarks, you can also cut them up into four strips. The choice is yours.
Have fun getting healthy! And let me know who wins! 😉
