I am very excited to share with you today’s blogging interview as a part of the 144 Plan to Blogging Brilliance. She is a blogger who truly understands and lives the challenge of blogging on the side–Paula Rollo!
While I first learned about Paula on her blog Beauty Through Imperfections I probably best enjoy reading her posts on Blogging on the Side which have helped me in so many ways as a blogger since the group first began. All that to say if you are looking for a regular dose of blogging tips and encouragement, I highly recommend subscribing to Blogging on the Side for great tips from some ladies who know how to get it done and get it done right. Without further ado, here is Paula Rollo!
1. Tell us a little about yourself, your family, how you got started blogging, how long you’ve been blogging, your favorite topics to write about, etc.
Hi there! I’m Paula from Beauty Through Imperfection and Blogging on the Side. I’ve been blogging for 9 years, but have gotten more serious about it in the last two. I published my first book this year, and I’m hoping to publish at least one more before 2015! My husband and I have been married for 5 years and we have two feisty toddlers who keep us on our toes.
2. Approximately how many hours a week do you devote to blogging and how do you distribute your time when blogging (i.e. writing posts, promotion, social media, design, etc.)?
I would say around 2-4 hours a day. So about 25+ hours a week. I break up my time depending on what I feel inspired to do at the time. When I’m in the mood to write I will get several posts drafted at once. Other times, when I need a break I will watch a TV show while I edit photos for posts. I do social media throughout the day, no real schedule there!
3. Do you have any time saving tips for being more efficient as a blogger?
Schedule time to work on your blog and time to spend away from your blog. I’ve found that having both helps me be more intentional with the time I spend working on the blog, while keeping my focus on the things that are most important in my life. I just wrote a post about finding time to write and being efficient with time if you would like to read more ideas!
4. How do you balance blogging and family/home responsibilities?
Similar to what I wrote above, I schedule! Naptime is when I do the bulk of my writing, but I also work on it sometimes after the kids are in bed as well. I may do some social media work or promoting throughout the day but the bulk of my work is done when the kids are in bed.
5. What do you personally think makes your content so appealing to your readers?
Amy Lynn Andrews is definitely my favorite. If I have a question I usually go to her site first and see if it’s a topic that she’s covered by searching her blog.
7. What are your favorite tools, products, apps, and/or programs you use as a blogger?
I use pic monkey for all my images, and do my writing in WordPress. I like keeping it simple.
8. What are your top 5 favorite WordPress Plugins?
Askimet for spam, What would Seth Godin Do, Social Sharing toolkit, and linkwithin
9. What is the best blogging advice you have received and/or could give?
Write for passion and write for searches. You need a good balance of both if you want to make a living blogging. I love writing encouraging pieces, but they don’t always bring in the same number of views that tutorials, crafts or advice posts do. I didn’t stop writing the encouraging posts that I love to write, and my followers love to read, I just started writing other things too. You don’t have to swap quality for quantity. You can have both!
