We all know that without a bit of attention our rooms can become run down over the years, and in these current economic times not many of us can afford to invest too much money on home décor. With that in mind, this article is intended to give you 5 easy and cost effective ways in which you can improve your home without having to spend a fortune.
Photo frames
Most people will agree that having a few photos of your family around your home is pretty common – often on shelves or above the fireplace – but have you considered it as a cost effective way of updating and decorating room’s right across your home?
It really is, instead of redecorating the full room adding some stylish photo frames around the room can make it feel new again – especially adding a new colour theme to a room to give it a new lease of life.
Photos are also a great way of adding a new talking point or centre piece to your room, do you have a favourite family photo? Look at getting it printed on a large canvas to create a focal point to a living room or dining room. It can even be a wonderful way of covering up any unwanted scuffs or marks that have emerged over the years, acting as a cheap and easy disguise for the wall.
Lampshades
Changing lampshades is a great way of just changing the feel to your room; it will never be something that will suddenly transform the whole look of a room, but it can just add a little bit of needed colour or change how the lighting compliments the room – especially if you can tie in a new colour theme with photo frames and some of the other ideas we have in this article.
Blankets or Throws
Sofa’s, especially leather ones, are probably the most used items in the home which also makes them the most easily damaged piece of furniture. Homes with young kids, or any animals, are susceptible to marks and damage on a regular occasion which over the years can make a sofa look easily dated and warn.
Many people would think about going out and buying a new sofa and spend thousands of dollars on one, often on interest free agreements over multiple years – not a great idea when money is tight. Instead of this idea why not cover it with a nice new furniture blanket or throw, designed to fit your décor or colour theme? This way any scuffs or areas of wear and tear disappear from the eye of guest as well as providing you with something nice to snuggle up into on your lazy Sunday afternoons.
Rugs
Alongside the blankets or throws, rugs are a great way of hiding marks but also a great way of adding a burst of colour to any room in your home. I think it’s fair to say replacement carpets or flooring are often out of reach for most of us, so a nice centre piece rug is a great way of changing the look of the living room, bedroom, kitchen or even the home office.
Ceramic Tiles
If you are wondering how to update your kitchen but you don’t want to fully redecorate the room, well instead of taking off your old warn ceramic tiles and getting your kitchen retiled, how about repainting them?
This is a really cost effective idea and can add a new splash of colour to your kitchen with minimal expense. Visit your local DIY store and all you will need are a few tubs of ceramic paints and a couple of decent paint brushes.
Art work
A good way of improving any room is to add a feature of focus point. A mistake that most people make is that they think they need to redecorate the full room with new pattern or wallpaper on the walls.
Instead of adding to every wall just simply take one wall and make it the focal point of your room, adding a couple of nice paintings, for example if you have a fireplace you already have a starting place. When we say paintings, they don’t have to be expensive Picasso’s, simply go for something you enjoy. Adding a new print to the wall is a cheap way or redecorating, without having to spend a fortune on changing the format and colour of your whole room – in fact it can complement any of the ideas above to fully redecorate a room with ease.

Photo frames, lampshades and art work is something that is used by me but I am exciting to try the other options mentioned in here.
Rugs come in very useful in our house to hide marks, but I would need about a thousand to cover up all the mess my three year old makes!
