An Inside Obstacle Course

You ever have one of those days where you just want to do everything your mom told you not to do?  Well that’s exactly what my daughter and I did last week.

On Friday, the scene outside our house looked something like this…

Needless to say,  our little two year old was getting antsy and this mom was needing something else to do besides play doll house…one…more…time.  The result?  We turned this…

Otherwise known as our dining room

Into this…

An Obstacle Course!
We had so much fun playing in our makeshift obstacle course.  I had more of a workout playing with her than I did my entire run that morning, all in the name of fun!

Peanut was crawling under chairs and over dowels…

Climbing over chairs…

Jumping into bean bags…

Tiptoeing and zig-zagging on the floor (“keep those feet on the line”)…

Crawling under the table…

Walking on pillows…

Climbing up a step stool…

And sliding down an ab bench into a pile full of stuffed animals.

Why we have an ab bench in our dining room is a total other story but it made for a great slide and the perfect ending to a fun indoor obstacle course.  I know…I know…how could I allow my daughter to climb on the furniture?  Well, have you ever tried it when the challenge was climb chairs while staying on your knees?  So much fun.  Either way you look at it, we had a blast and my daughter also developed some much needed balance skills.  Win-win.

Now, when it comes to another rainy day, I have a good guess what my daugher will be asking me, “Mom, can we make an obstacle course today?”

Have other physical indoor activities you like to do with your kids on a rainy day?  If so, please share them in the comments below.  I’d love to hear about them.
But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.  Luke 18:16

  3. LOVE this Kathy! We have to be so creative to keep our littles engaged on days like that :) It’s been REALLY cold here in Germany and of our 3 children, our youngest two are boys ages 3 & 5, so as you can imagine, they have LOTS of energy to get out every day :)

Thanks so much for linking this to my “A Day In The Life Of…” Thursday Blog Hop :)

  5. This is such a great rainy day activity and I bet it gets all the wiggles out. I am a new Pinterest follower visiting from Somewhat Simple. Vicky from Mess For Less

  6. Great idea! I’ve got 3 boys and they routinely take apart our couch to use the cushions (including the big ones you sit on!) to create things to jump over or crash into. They also use them as shields when they play Big Hits or Knee Football (which I do try to limit!) Thanks for sharing your creativity!

  7. Wow, this sure looks like fun :) My three boys often dismantle things just to see what’s on the inside. I think this will keep them better occupied!

  8. This is fantastic! My boys would go crazy for this :) Thank you so much for sharing at Taking A Timeout Thursday!

  9. What great fun! This is perfect for those bad weather days! Thanks for linking up to the Kids Co-op!
