Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent

If you’re looking for that extra way to save money, want to live a little greener or just prefer detergents without those extra dyes, check this recipe out.  I started using it a little over a year ago and now its all I use.  Wash your clothes in this and use distilled white vinegar for your softener and you’re set.

Liquid Laundry Detergent

1/3 bar Fels-Naptha or Ivory Soap

1/2 c. washing soda (NOT baking soda)
1/2 c. borax powder
Water

Grate soap into a sauce pan.  Add 6 cups water and heat until soap melts.  Add washing soda and borax; stir until dissolved.  Remove from heat.  Pour 4 cups hot water into a 2 gallon bucket.  Add soap mixture and stir.  Add 22 cups of water and stir.
Me trying to stir a double batch with my whisk–
so this is why they recommend only one batch at a time.
My husband stirring with his new paint stirrer attachment
because he was dying to use it on something.

Let soap sit for about 24 hours to gel.  If desired, blend small portions at a time in a blender or food processor for a more “store-like” consistency (choosing not to blend does not change the effectiveness of this product).  Store in airtight containers such as old laundry detergent jugs.

Use 1/2 c. per load as you would regular liquid laundry detergent.  Makes enough for approximately 64 loads.
